Don’t Get Screwed By Social Networks… Why Should a Business Use Social Networking?

For starters, a business should use social networking to take back their products. Currently the social networking environment is filled with fan pages for various products, brands, and television shows, among other things. When a business asserts itself in a social network, it brings content to the table that the fan pages cannot. A fan page for a television show cannot, for example, create content such as a trailer for that week’s episode for dissemination. Conversely, for a business to have a social network presence, the business must first decide what they want out of a social network and then have someone create the social network profiles. The business can either hire someone to specifically work on their social network campaigns, or reassign someone from another department to monitor the profile. It is recommended to have someone keep tabs on the profile at all times, as sometimes fans might post negative things about your product on your page.


How Should A Business Use Social Networking

In recent years, businesses have even entered the fray and started creating social networking profiles for their properties, products, services, television shows, and even fictional characters.

For example, a restaurant owner creates a profile on Facebook for their restaurant. A diner eats at the restaurant and then find the restaurant’s Facebook profile and “Likes” it. This then shows up on their friend’s news feeds stating that the person likes the restaurant. In July 2010, Procter & Gamble’s advertising team took their Old Spice brand’s popular “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” ads to the social network by filming Isaiah Mustafa, the star of those ads, in a bathroom set answering questions and comments from viewers. The questions were culled from Old Spice’s various social networking profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and others. Over a period of three days, 186 videos were filmed. The campaign went viral and was reported on in the mass media. In 36 hours, the videos had a combined view count of 23 million.

For the week following that event, the Old Spice brand remained one of the hottest topics on the Internet.

Most social networks offer various ways for each member to connect and talk to other members using the network. These methods could be in comments to statements made by others, instant messages that appear directly on the other person’s screen if they’re online at the time, messages, or e-mail.

Who uses social networks? Everyone! Not just high school and college students. Families use them to easily keep track of one another no matter how far apart each member lives. Professionals use them to network with colleagues. Businesses even use them as marketing tools.

What Are The Top Social Networking Sites

Currently there are several social networking sites that are considered the top of the list. Chief among those is Facebook. Facebook was founded in 2004 and quickly became the #1 social networking site, far outpacing its nearest rival, MySpace. According to technology blog TechCrunch, 175 million people log into Facebook every day to update their profiles, comment on friend’s profiles, play games, and read the latest news. Not only that, but Facebook has over 500,000,000 registered users.

Another top contender is Twitter. Twitter is a bit odd when it comes to its take on social networking. Each user’s posts can only be 140 characters, not words, but letters (including spaces and punctuation). Twitter also does not have any games on its platform. It is made for pure social interaction. The character limit forces people to be concise in their updates and messages to other users.

For business contacts, LinkedIn is a popular social network. It allows people to sign up and connect with people they either work with now or worked with in the past to create a network of colleagues, past and present.
